Message from the Pastor

Thank you for visiting our website. I appreciate your interest in the First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett.

Ours is a small, historic congregation located in the Hamptons, with roots in the Reformed tradition, offering opportunities for spiritual growth, service, and fellowship in the name of Jesus Christ. As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), we embrace the six “Great Ends of the Church”:

  • The Proclamation of the Gospel. We believe that the good news of God’s love in Jesus Christ is for all the peoples of the world.
  • Building up Christian community. We are a loving, caring, inclusive congregation that shows the love of God through prayer, nurture, mutual support, and Christian service.
  • The Worship of God. We respond to God’s love through worship by praising God, praying together, and responding to God’s word.
  • Theology Matters. We love God with both our hearts and our minds, and thus seek to study the scripture and affirm together the sovereignty of God, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • The Promotion of Social Justice. We have been saved in order to serve! We believe in and work for social, racial, and economic justice for all of God’s peoples.
  • Demonstrating our Faith. We seek to be a people who practice what we preach.

If you are seeking a church home, we invite you to worship with us to see if God is calling you to worship, grow, and serve with us. Please know that you are always welcome at the First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett.

Sincerely,
Steve Howarth, Pastor

About Our Pastor

The Rev. Steven E. Howarth, M.Div, M.B.A., began his pastorate with us on Easter Sunday, 2005. Steve draws on his 23 years of experience as pastor of churches in Michigan, Chicago, and upstate New York, as well as his years of training and experience as a pastoral psychotherapist, as he serves among us.

A new church member reports that his “church shopping” ended when he and his wife experienced worship under Pastor Howarth’s leadership, for, he said, “the preaching reflected the balance of scholarship, emotion, and applicability we were looking for but had not been able to find.” A church elder once said of Pastor Howarth: “Don’t be fooled by Steve’s easy manner and ready smile, he’s strong and deeply principled.”

Pastor Howarth’s wife, the Rev. Nancy O’Neal Howarth, is also an ordained Presbyterian minister. Together they have two children, Jim and Kate, both college students.

Bagpiping (as player, band member, competitor, and instructor) and motorcycling (on his ’97 Harley-Davidson FLHTC) are favorite pastimes for Pastor Howarth.

Pastor Howarth stands ready to offer compassion and assistance to all who are in need, regardless of church affiliation.

He would welcome hearing from you.
